QF responds to fuel price rise - Qantas has just announced an increase in domestic and international airfares sold in Australia. Effective 09 May domestic fares will increase by about 3.5%, while international fares will rise by approximately 3%. CEO Geoff Dixon said the move came in response to the continuing rise of jet fuel prices. He said Jetstar was also reviewing its fare levels, and increases to Qantas fares sold outside Australia are also under consideration. Dixon said QF was working hard to cut costs by extending its Sustainable Future Program, as well as a hiring freeze and cutbacks to non-essential expenditure. "However, an increase in base fares is now necessary to partially bridge the widening gap between the actual increase in the cost of fuel and the amount we offset through surcharges or no-fuel cost improvements," he said.
U.S. Airlines Posted Nearly $1 Billion Q1 Loss - According to The Washington Post, major U.S. airlines have announced nearly $1 billion in losses for the first quarter of this year, a financial toll that is forcing carriers to reduce flights, cut jobs, add passenger fees and seek potential merger partners.
Compensation for being BUMPED! “For business travelers, time is money -- getting involuntarily bumped can be an expensive proposition.” NBTA (National Business Travel Association – DBT is a member) called for an increase in the compensation due to passengers denied boarding for overbooked flights, and we are pleased that DOT will soon implement such an increase.” Under the new DOT rule that goes into effect next month, airlines will compensate passengers who are involuntary bumped due to overbooking as follows:
Passengers who are involuntarily bumped and arrive: |
Are entitled to: |
Up to 59 minutes late |
Zero compensation |
1-2 hours late |
The lesser of
- $400
- 100% of the price of your one-way ticket |
2 hours or more late |
The lesser of
- $800
- 200% of the price of your one-way ticket |
The new rule will also expand the compensation rule to cover flights operated with aircraft seating 30 people or more; the current rule covers flights with more than 60 seats. Compensation payments are in addition to the value of the passenger's ticket, which the flyer can apply toward alternate transportation or have refunded.
DOT also announced the opening of additional airspace for pilots to fly around bad weather on westbound flights out of New York, an area that accounts for much of the nation's air travel delays.
While these efforts will certainly improve some of the challenges faced by today's airline passengers, there is much more work to be done. The U.S. now needs to focus on implementing a Next Generation air transportation system for the twenty-first century that will open more currently unused airspace, improve our ability to fly in bad weather and enable planes to move in and out of airports faster.”

Airline News Aloha Airlines Close - Bankruptcy! Aloha Airlines is to close its passenger airline operations after more than six decades of business. It comes a week after the carrier filed for bankruptcy. Hawaiian Airlines said it was “deeply saddened” to learn of its rivals demise, saying it was the victim of “the ever increasing costs and demands of today's airline industry”. It was taking steps to help Aloha passengers and would expand its daily flights schedule by more than 6000 seats.
V Australia will fly from Sydney to Los Angeles from December 15 as Sir Richard Branson insisted the trans-Pacific route was in “dire need” of fresh competition. Daily services will start on December 15 with flight VA001 departing Sydney at 9.45pm and arriving in the US at 4.30pm the same day. Return flights depart LA at 11.30pm local time, arriving 9.20am two days later. It will operate a three-class service, International Economy, business and premium economy. Two more V Australia destinations will be unveiled in the “coming weeks”. Sir Richard Branson said: “The trans-Pacific route is in dire need of competition and a good shake up and that's a challenge we are always keen to take on.” Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey said the carrier had spent two years researching the project. “The announcements are the first of many and we have every intention of bringing revolutionary change not just to the trans-Pacific route but across the region,” he said. V Australia's every day return fares of $1899 are 16 per cent cheaper than the lowest available published fare for the same travel period, he added.
North West to offer onward flights V Australia will partner with - North West Airlines to offer onward flights to the US and Canada when its Los Angeles flights get off the ground later this year. The announcement came as the Virgin Blue offshoot said it would ramp up frequencies when it takes delivery of more new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. “V Australia is also looking at other potential international destinations and will announce its next two markets in the coming weeks,” the carrier said. The launch of Los Angeles flights could spark a trans-Pacific price war as Qantas and United look to protect their market share. V Australia is offering introductory economy fares of $999 while every day fares will start at $1899, which it claimed were 16 per cent cheaper than comparable fares offered by rivals. On board features will include complimentary meals and drinks and in-flight technology allowing passengers to send and receive texts and email. Other in-flight features and discount fates will follow, it said. The three class configuration will offer flat beds in business class with the airline promising its 40 premium economy seats will be “among the largest seats ever offered” in that class.
European Open Skies Agreement - The much-publicised Open Skies Agreement between the US and the European Union starts this week, lifting bilateral restrictions on flights between the two areas. What will be the impact? The agreement allows US airlines to expand nonstop service from their hubs to coveted destinations, particularly those favored by higher-paying business travellers. “With Open Skies, the barriers and restrictions to transatlantic travel are removed, and the consumer will be the real winner, with a greater choice of gateways to European destinations.
Other implications?
- Some immediate reduced fares. Bmi, for example, announced a new fare sale in conjunction with Open Skies. The airline is offering a UK transatlantic fare sale starting at $404 roundtrip beginning today through April 10, 2008 for travel from May 7 through the end of 2008. “The great thing about these two fare sales is they are valid for travel through all of 2008,” says pr spokeswoman Nancy Vaughan in a press release.
- Until now, only British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and United Airlines could operate transatlantic flights from Heathrow. Starting this month, Air France will start daily nonstop service from Los Angeles to Heathrow. British Airways, for its part, is launching a new airline called OpenSkies in June that will fly nonstop JFK to Paris or Brussels, using a B-757 in a three-class configuration of 82 seats, with only 30 in economy class and the rest in business with lie-flat beds and premium economy.
- American Airlines is doubling frequency on their route into London Stansted Airport and Eos Airlines is adding a new route from Newark Liberty International Airport into Stansted. US Airways, Northwest Airlines, Continental and United are all launching new service to Heathrow, and Zoom Airlines is launching new seasonal routes to London Gatwick from Fort Lauderdale and San Diego.
- European carriers, for now, seem to prefer to add more code share partnerships, according to International Travel Daily News. Lufthansa will code share with United Airlines on 28 weekly flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Air France will sell two flights from Brussels and 13 direct flights between the UK and Ireland and the US operated by Delta.
- Aer Lingus and JetBlue Airways have a deal that is quick and easy for both carriers. The deal links both their websites and allows passengers to make a single Internet booking on aerlingus.com to and from Ireland and more than 40 continental US destinations.
Although logic dictates lower prices as a result of increased competition, high fuel prices and added airport surcharges, at Heathrow, for example, are tempering any immediate fare decreases, according to media reports.
But passenger growth will continue. The FAA expects to see transatlantic passenger growth of about seven percent for the next four years on US and foreign carriers, with US carriers increasing international capacity more than eight percent in 2008.

Qantas frequent flyers to cash in - Qantas revamps frequent flyer program - Loyalty points can be used like cash - Frequent flyers able to book any seat - QANTAS frequent flyers will be able to use their points in the same way as cash to get any seat on any flight from July 1 as part of a revamp of the airline's loyalty program. The airline will also make it easier for its five million frequent flyers to earn points from an expanding range of frequent flyer partners and to burn them on new items such as merchandise and retail vouchers. The most drastic change will be the addition of a second tier to the loyalty program, to be known as Anyseat, which opens up all seats on Qantas and Jetstar flights. The new tier aims to remove a bottleneck preventing many frequent flyers booking tickets when they want to fly. But they will pay more for the option and they will not know how much more until they try to book. Redemptions under the new system will start at about the same points level they are now and rise according to the availability of seats, demand and the time they are flying. This means travellers will burn more points if they book closer to a flight and fewer if they buy their tickets ahead of time or during quiet periods. A website similar to the Qantas booking engine used by people buying tickets will display how many points a particular seat will cost and give other options on and around that date. Those wanting to remain with the existing system will do so on a separate "Classic" website. Qantas Loyalty executive general manager Simon Hickey said yesterday: "Everything that's there today - all of the value that's there today, all of those seats, all of that capacity, everything that's in that program today - none of that changes. "What we're doing is adding a lot more choice. So if you want to fly at 7am, Monday morning, Melbourne to Sydney, you can get it now." The revamp comes as Qantas separates its frequent flyer operations into a new segment before a partial float expected this year. The airline is believed to be considering an initial public offering this year that would put 40per cent of the program on the market. Other changes will include the ability to pay for taxes and charges using frequent flyer points as well as more easily use a mix of cash and points to pay for flights. The airline estimates a return flight from Sydney to London costing 128,000 points in the Classic system will cost about 200,000 points when roughly $700 in taxes and charges are factored in. The airline plans to make it easier for members to earn points by expanding the number of businesses it counts as frequent flyer partners. It will introduce new ways of redeeming them for rewards such as holiday packages and retail vouchers for businesses such as supermarkets and department stores. Mr Hickey was optimistic frequent flyers would welcome the changes but admitted that frequent flyer points were an emotive issue. "I'm adding choice. I'm adding utility value and the ability to use your points in a much greater way," he said.

HOTEL KEY CARDS - Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?
Answer:
a. Customer's name
B. Customer's partial home address
c. Hotel room number
d. Check-in date and out dates
e. Customer's credit card number and expiration date!
When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense. Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process. But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT! The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader. For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip! If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card. *Information courtesy of: Queensland Police Service. Health & DFAT Warnings
U.S. Increases Fingerprints IDs at Airports - International visitors flying into New York now face being identified by all ten fingerprints, part of a heightened security system aimed at identifying potential terror suspects and visa fraud, officials said.
LONDON Heathrow News - Heathrow Airports new Terminal 5 is now open for its first passengers. Heathrow Terminal 5 Update 28APR: British Airways (BA) officials are saying that only a "handful of bags" are being lost now at their new Terminal 5 at London Heathrow airport, although they don't say exactly how many a "handful" really means. Furthermore, most of the 28,000 or so bags that didn't accompany their owners have found their way home, although some are still missing in action. These include many of the bags trucked from Terminal 5 to Milan for sorting, and are now being trucked back to the UK for more sorting. In addition, the insurance companies who said they wouldn't cover passenger bags going through Terminal 5 have changed their minds, after pressure from the government and consumer groups. Finally, there is speculation that BA may need to rebuild part of the baggage system to increase the amount of storage for bags in case of future problems. The baggage system design assumption appears to have been that system problems would only last a few minutes, and that the numbers of bags not being able to be successfully transferred between flights would be significantly reduced because all BA flights would be operating out of the same terminal.
